YouTube has started rolling out Dual Format streaming to a limited number of streamers.

In this article we will take you through the steps to get it set up. The process is currently somewhat involved, but it will become more streamlined as the feature is refined.

Step 1 - YouTube dashboard

First check if you have access to the feature by going to your YouTube dashboard.

Notice the minor difference in the text here. If you see the text at the top box "Connect a vertical stream..." you are good to go!

Two black boxes comparing dual stream settings. The top has a green check mark and text about connecting streams. The bottom has a red cross.

Step 2 - Stream URL and keys

Begin by copying your stream URL.

Streaming settings interface showing options for dual streaming, stream URL, and privacy set to Private. Black background with blue accents.

Since we will be outputting 2 streams we need to get a stream key for both the horizontal and the vertical stream. Later we will set up XSplit Broadcaster to send the correct layout to each stream.

Horizontal stream key

Copy the stream key for the horizontal output

Vertical Stream Key

Select encoder

Blue arrow points from "Auto" to "Encoder" in a dark interface. Text includes "connect your encoder to go live" with no data displayed.

Copy the stream key for the vertical output

You should now have the following collected from step 1 and 2.

  • Stream URL

  • Horizontal Stream Key

  • Vertical Stream Key

Step 3 - Setting up XSplit Broadcaster for YouTube Dual Format Streaming

In the XSplit Broadcaster YouTube output plugin switch to Stream Key setup.

YouTube Live Properties menu with options: Web Authentication, Stream Key. A blue arrow points to Stream Key. Red YouTube logo visible.

Insert the stream URL and the keys collected in step 2

YouTube Live Properties dialog showing RTMP URL, Stream Key, and Vertical Stream Key. Black and blue interface with visible codec settings.

Step 4 - Start streaming

Start the stream in XSplit Broadcaster and you will now see both the horizontal and the vertical output in your YouTube Dashboard

YouTube Studio streaming dashboard highlighting encoder setup. Prompts include "Connect your encoder to go live" and dual stream options.

Streaming in both horizontal and vertical formats allows you to connect with a broader audience.
